The staff and trustees of the Cultural Center of Cape Cod are inviting submissions to its first annual national and regional poetry competitions.
A national prize of $1,000 will be awarded for a single, unpublished poem. All US poets 18 and over are eligible.
A regional prize of $250 will be awarded for a single, unpublished poem by a permanent or seasonal adult resident of Cape Cod, Nantucket, or Martha’s Vineyard. All Cape and Islands poets are also eligible for the national award.
Submissions will be accepted beginning November 1.
“This is a chance for us to support poets in several ways,” says Lauren Wolk, novelist, poet, and public relations director at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, “with recognition, with reward, and with the chance to meet emerging and established Cape and islands poets, at a reading in the spring, to share our work.”
Poets should submit up to three poems of any style or subject totaling no more than five pages with an entry fee of $15 by January 15 (postmark). All entries should be typewritten on plain, white paper. The poet’s name should not appear on any page except the cover page, which should include name, address, phone number, and e-mail address, the titles of the poems submitted, and a one-paragraph biography. “Contest Entry” should be clearly indicated on both the outer envelope and the cover sheet. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but poets should notify the Cultural Center immediately if submissions are accepted for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts will not be returned.
The Cultural Center retains the right to arrange for publication of the winning entries in a local periodical, to be determined. The winning entries will be displayed in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center for one year. The names of the winners will be posted on the Cultural Center’s website by April 2008.
Submission guidelines are available from the Cultural Center’s website at or at 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth. For more information, call Lauren Wolk at 508-394-7100 or e-mail her at
