SANDWICH- A pair of Sandwich teens who earned national attention this summer when they turned a profit selling jewelry made from dead cicadas are now a permanent part of pop culture history.
Brady F. Cullinan of Quaker Meetinghouse Road and friend Katheryn E. Maloney of Viking Lane, both Sandwich natives, were the subject of a query posed on the televised quiz show “Jeopardy!” last Thursday evening.
Brady and Katheryn’s answer was posed in the first round of the quiz show competition, under the category “EEEUW GROSS!”
The answer read, “In 2008, two teens from this Massachusetts Cape went a little buggy and sold jewelry made from dead cicadas.”
Contestant Jay Schrader responded with the appropriate question, “What is Cape Cod?”
Brady’s mother, Wendy J. Cullinan, said she heard the news from several friends who saw the episode, but could not believe it until she saw the answer on Internet archive that stores past “Jeopardy” answers.
Debra A. Landry, who encouraged Brady and Katheryn to start crafting the cicada jewelry, said the pair have thousands of dead cicadas stored and are still making the jewelry for local merchants like Lavender Moon on Route 6A.
She said that the startup jewelry company, known as Wing Bling, has also started selling its wares on E-Bay again, a practice the teens had halted for a while.
Wing Bling is also getting ready for the holidays. Ms. Landry said she and the kids have started thinking about making Christmas ornaments out of the dead cicadas.
Anyone interested in purchasing some Wing Bling can contact Ms. Landry at 508-833-4440 or visit www.wingblingstore.com.
