The town has a new top “fun” guy.
Selectmen have voted to hire Guy J. Boucher of Barre, Vermont, as the town’s new director of recreation.
He fills the slot vacated by Daniel M. Landesman, who left the position in May.
As recreation director, Mr. Boucher will be in charge of organizing a wide range of activities, ranging from summer swimming lessons to the town’s annual Independence Day festivities.
Mr. Boucher was one of 30 people who applied for the recreation director’s job. Five people were interviewed on July 7 and a second round of interviews were held on July 11.
In recommending Mr. Boucher for the post, Town Manager George H. Dunham cited Mr. Boucher’s extensive experience in the area of municipal recreation, which included five years working as a program coordinator for the Town of Barnstable.
That team comprised Mr. Dunham, Selectmen Chairman Linell Grundman, recreation committee member Joanne T. Sykes, Human Resources Director Marie L. Buckner, and Assistant Town Manager Douglas A. Lapp.
Mr. Boucher holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Norwich University.  For the past three years, he has held the position of senior associate director of recruitment for Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont.
In addition to his work in Vermont, Mr. Boucher also served as the assistant recreation director for the Town of Brewster and worked in that capacity for three years. He served three years in the United States Marine Corps, where he earned the rank of lance corporal.
His first day on the job in Sandwich is scheduled to be Monday, August 4.
